First Day of School

This week's theme is "School."

This is what the first day of school looks like at my house. Kids. In the car. Going to school. This is the best I could do when it came to pictures.

I used to take first day of school pictures every year. They were so cute, so fresh and eager to start a new school year. When did I stop taking those pictures? I can't remember. I just know that I was walking one morning and walked by a house in the neighborhood. The mom and the kids were outside in the yard taking that first day of school picture, and I felt like I had missed a milestone somehow. The best I can guess is, when Beth started Middle School, and our schedules changed, the pictures were forgotten in the rush to get out the door. She ended up missing the bus on her first day of Middle School, even though she thought she left in plenty of time. Luckily, a friend's mom was there and rescued her!

Yesterday I visited Yahoo! to look up the best route for Jeffrey to take home from Gibson City, and I came across an article on taking good first day of school pictures. Of course, I can't find the actual article now that I'm looking for it again - they probably figure, if you haven't read it yet, it's too late for this year. Anyway, after reading the article, I decided that I would take pictures this morning. Never mind that I haven't done it in a few years. The kids still have a few years of school left, so I can get pictures of those first days. Guess what? They're teenagers. They don't want their pictures taken on the first day of school. I snapped a couple anyway, even though they did not cooperate.

Notice in the picture that Beth is driving and Cory is in the back seat. If Beth had had her way, Cory would have had to ride the bus. I told her that, if she is going to drive to school, then there is no reason that her brother cannot ride along. Why should he have to ride the bus when they are going the same place? She was not happy about it and told him that he had to ride in the back seat, which wasn't a bad idea, anyway because he had so much stuff to take. He's going to have to ride the bus home, since Beth has to go to work after school - the only reason she gets to drive to school - otherwise she would be riding the bus. I won't see her until after 9 tonight.

  2. Ya know.. I didn't realize your kids were as old as they are! I learn something new every day!

I wonder too about when we stop thinking of things as milestones..

That's funny about her making him sit in the back seat. Sounds like something my kids would have done.

  3. You know, reading this, I am reminded how tough kids have it. To have such a long day at her age is tough. I'm sure she likes parts of her day but school probably ain't at the top of her list! It's an insightful post and photo.
