Look for the Supermoon Coming March 19

Full Moon view from earth In Belgium (Hamois).Image via Wikipedia
I saw this somewhere last week, and then a friend of mine just shared it again on Facebook.  On March 19th, the full moon will be at it's closest point to Earth in 18 years -- a mere 356,577 kilometers away. (a kilometer is ‎.62 of a mile for those of us who don't know)  So that's only 221,078 miles.  (The average distance between the Earth and the moon is about 238,000 miles or 382.900 km.)

There's all kinds of buzz on the Internet about whether this 'supermoon' will cause earthquakes and all kinds of natural disasters.  Science seems to say no or that the effect on the earth will be minor and have no significant increase over the normal influence the moon has on the Earth's tides, so I'm thinking we don't really have to worry about it.

The thing I'm worried about is forgetting to go look at it.  I love looking at the moon, and I just want to see if it looks bigger than normal, and probably take some pictures, too.  I know you're all going to want to get out your telescopes and cameras or just get outside and get a good look at the 'supermoon' on Saturday night.  So mark it on your calendars and don't forget.  And could somebody be sure to remind me?

  2. Oh yeah, hockey. Somebody should've reminded me of this moon before I told Jeffrey I'd go to a hockey game with him. But we do get the good seats, and probably food. I wonder if the Bradley Center has an Eastern window I could peak out?
