Print Walmart's Coupon Policy

Print it and take it with you to the store.

I read about the new Walmart Coupon Policy on My Wooden Spoon last week.  According to the policy, you can use checkout coupons from other stores at Walmart - the ones that print at the register and usually say they are good at whatever store you got them from.  (Of course they say they are good at the store where you got them - they want you to think you have to use them there, but they're manufacturer's coupons and should be good anywhere.  It makes me feel kind of dumb that I never realized this before.)

So this weekend Cory was home, and he needed body wash and deodorant.  We had a couple buy one deodorant get a body wash free coupons, so he grabbed two different deodorants and their corresponding body washes.  Then I realized I had a $3.50 off coupon for deodorant (printed at Walgreens, but it clearly stated 'Manufacturer Coupon' on it) and a $2.00 off coupon for the body wash, which was a better deal than getting the $4 body wash for free, so I decided to use those instead of the buy 1/get 1 coupon.

The cashier rang everything up and started on the coupons.  When she got to the $3.50 off coupon, she tried to hand it back, telling me that it was a Walgreens coupon.  When I tried to tell her that it is a Manufacturer's Coupon, and according to the coupon policy, Walmart does take them, she didn't listen and still kept focusing on the fact that it said Walgreens on it.  She ended up calling someone else over, and they decided they could take it, but they rang it up as a price match instead of a coupon. (I think they were wrong, because, according to the new policy, Walmart does not accept Competitors' coupons for dollars/cents or percentage off - so if this really had been a Walgreens coupon instead of a Manufacturer's coupon, they should not have accepted it.)  Regardless of how they did it, I did get to use my coupon, but I wasn't sure for a bit.

Some of the cashiers may be aware of the updated Walmart Coupon Policy, and I'm sure they'll be expected to learn it before too long, but for now I think the best thing is to just print it out and have it with me next time I shop there.  That way, if they don't want to take some of my coupons, I have proof that they're supposed to.  If you use coupons and shop at Walmart, you might want to print it, too.

  1. I completely agree about printing the policy. I recommend you print the photo one actually because it's very clear and easy to understand. As Walmart Moms, we were told that are supposed to be training cashiers on the new policy but as with anything, it all takes time. Thanks for being patient with them. They truly are trying to make things better;)

  2. I was trying to decide whether I just wanted to print the plain policy from the webpage or the pdf download with all the photos. I think you're right about printing the full-color one. The (tiny) extra cost of the printer ink will be quickly offset by the coupon savings if the policy is easy-to-read and understand.

The Walmart Moms are supposed to be training the cashiers? Interesting. Seems like something that should be handled by the store managers, specifically POS.
