Still Looking

Looking at the Sky on Friday ended, so I haven’t been posting sky pictures.  There are probably some other sky gazing memes out there, but I haven’t gone looking.  I am, however, still looking at the sky.  I just can’t help myself!

I just pulled these off my camera and decided to share.

I love a good sunset.

I took these shots of the full moon last month.  I tried two different camera settings, and now I can’t decide which one I like best.  What do you think?

I took these on from the van when we were taking Cory back to his dorm a couple weeks ago.

The sunset the other night had me taking my camera out to the deck again, trying to capture the light and color in the sky.  Sometimes it’s just amazing.

You could read all kinds of camera reviews trying to find the best camera, but I think the best thing is just to pay attention to what’s around you, and when you see something you like, just take a bunch of pictures.  Some of them are bound to turn out, right?  That’s pretty much my approach to photography.  Thank goodness for digital cameras, because it doesn’t quite work that way when you have to pay to get rolls of film developed.

Once again I was out on my deck taking pictures of gorgeous end-of-day clouds.
While I was out there, one of the neighbors started shooting off fireworks – either that or this tree just discovered a new shampoo for hair growth and things are popping out all over.

Even when I’m busy working inside, I often catch myself looking out the window to see what the sky looks like.  I don’t really do it on purpose, just happen to glance and see something that catches my attention.  The other night I was folding laundry in the bedroom when I caught a glimpse of the sky.  The clouds were all gorgeous and pink, and I just had to grab my camera and head out to the deck to see if I could get some pics.

Unfortunately the pictures didn’t turn out as well as I would have liked, but I did get to enjoy the sunset.  I have to wonder how many gorgeous skies I miss when I don’t happen to glance out.  Wouldn’t it be cool if there was some kind of driveway alarm or deck alarm you could install that would alert you every time the sky was just can’t-be-missed gorgeous?  Somebody invent one of those, OK?

Last Wednesday evening – clouds + setting sun = one gorgeous sky.

Watching the sky is definitely more fun than setting up a health savings account!  Maybe not as useful, but definitely more fun.  I think I just might be addicted!

I really enjoyed this sunset as we were driving home from Illinois last weekend.

It was kind of fun to watch the sun peek in and out of the clouds.

Since I was shooting from a moving van, I just took a bunch, hoping to get something good. Then my batteries died so I switched cameras, and then Cory shot a few from the back seat. I might even have enough photos for a couple of slideshows, but these are the ones I liked.

Driving (riding actually – Jeffrey was driving) into the sunset.

A lot of times I feel that power lines and light poles are in the way when I’m trying to take pictures of the sky, but I kind of like them against the orange of the sunset in these.

I know I usually get my Looking at the Sky post up a lot earlier, but it is still Friday, right?  I’ve just been busy doing other things – posting something about the book I just finished (see last post), picking Cory up from school, running by the library to pick up a letter of recommendation (for Cory for scholarship applications), washing dishes, cooking…  I haven’t had time to look into Outer Banks vacation rentals or figure out which photo(s) I want to post this week.  Oh, who am I fooling?  No sense in looking into vacation rentals – who has time for a vacation, anyway?

Luckily, I can look at the sky wherever I am, and it’s just as gorgeous here as anywhere else in the world!!

…though some people are flying off to those other places:

I had to go pick Cory up from play practice this afternoon.  He drove home, which is good, because he needs the practice.  Overall, he’s a really good driver, but he just doesn’t want to drive very often, so he doesn’t have his license yet.  I guess that works out well for us, because we don’t have to pay for extra car insurance or go looking for used cars so he has something to drive.  On the other hand, it would be nice if I didn’t have to go pick him up when he has after-school activities.

But that’s not the point.  The point is, he was driving so I was looking at the sky.  Yes, I look at the sky when I’m driving, too, but I’m sure it’s much safer when someone else is driving.  I took a couple pics from the van and then a few more once we got home.

I liked this one best:

I took this with my cell phone Monday evening, because I was out, and I didn’t have my real camera with me.  I loved the pink on the clouds.

One of these days I want to get a digital camera that will fit in my purse – not just any digital camera, but one with at least 10x optical zoom.  There are a few really promising ones available, but I’m waiting for the price to come down because I’m cheap like that.  Whether I’m looking for digital cameras, clarks shoes, or school supplies, I just need to get the best deal possible.  In the meantime, I have my cell phone with me, and it takes pretty decent pictures, though there’s no zoom.

I’m shocked that I haven’t participated in Looking at the Sky on Friday for two weeks.  Last week we were out of town, so I know what my reason for missing it was, but I can’t remember what I was doing the week before that – looking for online life insurance maybe?

Anyway, on our way to Lexington, Kentucky I took a few pictures as we drove through Louisville.  We’ve driven through a couple times before, both times at night with the lights of the city reflecting off the water and looking so pretty, and both times I did not have my camera out.  This time, I was prepared.  No lights, but a sunset and some nice reflections in the water.

After the first couple shots, it got a little difficult, trying to shoot without catching parts of the bridge, too.

Then, a little further down the road I kind of liked the power lines that got in my way:

We went to the first high school football game of the year last Friday night.  Usually the band plays, but since school hadn’t started yet, they didn’t.  We went anyway since I bought the passes at registration, and it’s a pretty enjoyable way to spend an evening.  Cory, the only one who actually attends school there, stayed home.

Our team did pretty well.  Sometimes the other teams are a lot bigger and better, and we all wish they’d take weight loss supplements, stop lifting weights, and skip practice for  a month or two so our team would have a chance.  This time, though, our team was ahead 13-0 with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.  And then the ref paused the game because of lightning – and according to state law, once the  ref mentions lightning, the game cannot resume for at least 30 minutes – from the last lightning strike.  It was still a ways off, and probably wouldn’t have even gotten to us until the game was over, but it was too late.  We decided not to wait around to see if the game would resume and just came on home, so I don’t know if they ever finished the game.

It was still a lot of fun, and I took some pictures of the sky, too – of course.

The moon was still visible, hadn’t even been covered by clouds by the time we left.  By the time we got home, the moon was gone, and it wasn’t long before we got some good rain – and sitting at home, inside where it’s dry, was much better than sitting out at a football game.  Definitely.

I took this the other evening, after some rain had moved through and the sun was setting.  The colors in the clouds were amazing.
