The Taco Bell Work Ethic

Has anyone else seen this Taco Bell commercial?  Wow - just a buck for those loaded grillers or any medium drink.  What a deal!  Notice anything else?

Yes, Taco Bell has set up their "Happier Hour" to run from 2-5 pm when these people are obviously supposed to be at work.  And Taco Bell is blatantly encouraging people to lie - or "say whatever you gotta say" - to get to Taco Bell for these deals.

I'm sorry, but that just seems wrong.  Is that really OK in today's society?

Truth of Advertising

I don't know about you, but I rarely pay attention to television commercials.  Except during the Super Bowl, and even then it's iffy.

You know how it is with commercials - that's the time to leave the room, whether you're going to the kitchen for a snack or running to the bathroom.  Nowadays many people don't even watch shows live, instead choosing to record them to the DVR and watch later. Then, of course, the commercials can be fast-forwarded through and skipped altogether - though that does make it hard to get anything else done while watching a show.  Or maybe that's just me.

I think people are more likely to listen to and pay attention to sirius radio advertising than to television commercials.  I mean, it's not like they can get up and leave the room if they're listening while driving down the road!  I suppose they could change stations, but I'm imagining that it's just easier to stay on the station they're listening to - especially if they're listening to something they really like.  Again, maybe that's just me.  I like to find a station I like, and I like to keep it there.  Bouncing around all over the dial makes me crazy.  So yeah, I'd be a lot more likely to listen to radio advertising than I am to pay attention to television commercials.

What about you?  Do you listen to radio advertising?  Watch television commercials?  Is there anything that you've bought because you saw or heard an ad?  Are there ads you've heard that are really clever, and you remember the ad but can't remember what they were selling?  That's me- occasionally I actually do sit down and see a commercial, and sometimes they're laugh out loud funny or really clever, but I probably couldn't tell you what they were selling to save my life. I'm sure the advertising executives are hoping that IS just me.

Who Even Thinks to Ask This Stuff?

I'm anxiously waiting for the commercials to get over so I can find out which celebrity America trusts the most, and which one is least trusted.  Not exactly.  I'm just wondering who really thinks to ask this stuff?

Most likely advertising agencies, don't you think?  They've got to know the best celebrities to hire for their ads and endorsements.  There's a bunch of money riding on choosing the right celebrity to endorse everything from designer engagement ring settings to bathroom cleaners.  Of course, they need to think a little bit harder about who they choose to actually write their ad campaigns, because some of those commercials are just plain dumb and don't encourage anybody to buy whatever they're hawking. (Think that awful orchestra teacher Target commercial, and, come to think of it, I don't think any of the current back-to-school/teacher commercials Target is airing right now will actually make anyone run out and shop at Target.)

Anyway, the answer is Betty White.  She was chosen the most trusted celebrity, and also the most likely to boost business.  That part clued me in to who was actually asking the question.

Paris Hilton and Charlie Sheen both ended up on the least trusted list.  I guess I can agree with that.  Would you really buy anything Charlie Sheen is selling?  But Betty White?  America's buying.

Orchestra Enrollment Declines

I don't know about everyone else, but if this guy was going to be my kid's orchestra teacher, I'd strongly suggest he take up sports - and you know I'm all about the arts...

He's just creepy, and this commercial does not inspire me to shop at Target, either.  Who comes up with this stuff?

Easy Family Meals

Hormel Foods CorporationImage via Wikipedia
This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hormel Foods. All opinions are 100% mine.

I always try to serve my family something good for dinner.  Of course, my idea of good and their idea of good may differ, but the important thing is that there's always a meal on the table.  Usually.  Sometimes I get really busy, think about dinner in the morning, and then never think about it again until it's almost time to eat.  I'm sure most of you know the feeling - rushing around like crazy trying to figure out what's in the fridge or the pantry that you can throw together before everybody starves.

I recently saw a commercial on television featuring Dinty Moore stew from hormel. For an easy family meal, the commercial suggested warming up a can of stew, cooking some noodles, and serving the stew on top of the noodles.  Add a vegetable your family likes, and you've got a quick semi-homemade meal.  Or hide the can (read: throw it in the recycle bin before anyone else sees it) and call it homemade.  With Hormel Foods' commitment to quality and flavor, who's to know?  Another thing I think would be good is to use the new Hormel Chili Master Chipotle Chicken Chili in my Layered Chicken Enchilada recipe.  It just sounds so good.

Seriously, as busy as we all are these days, with kids and work and just keeping up around the house, we can all use a little help now and then.  Visit the Hormel Foods Recipes site for all kinds of ideas, from quick & easy to holiday recipes.  If keeping a few cans of Hormel Chili or Dinty Moore Stew in your pantry means you can get dinner on the table sooner, that's a good thing.  Americans have been doing it for 75 years!

That's right - Dinty Moore products and Hormel Chili were introduced in 1935, 75 years ago.  Each brand began with a single product - Hormel® chili con carne and Dinty Moore® beef stew – but today, feature almost 20 varieties combined. Both brands have come a long way, and they're the first brands that come to mind when most American's think of stew or chili.  I'd be hard-pressed to think of another brand right now.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary here's a video of commercials through the years.  See if you remember any of these:

Gotta Get Away

I just watched a commercial for vacations.  Yes, I know, I usually don't pay any attention to commercials, so I'm not sure why this one caught my attention.  Maybe it was the scenery and the gorgeous beaches and the people obviously having a great time.  Ah, yes, one of those vacations would be nice.

It won't be happening anytime soon, with work and a kid in school, and Jeffrey and I still haven't figured out where we want to go for the 25th anniversary get-away we're planning to go on, never mind anything in the meantime.  I'd love somewhere with a beach, but Jeffrey doesn't get too excited about beaches - and he'd need to get crackin' with the fitness equipment between now and then, big time.  Hey, I'd feel better about hitting the beach if I hit that equipment myself.

Maybe we should just go to Alaska?  No need for toned beach bodies there.

Super Bowl Sunday

I don't watch football. I never really understood football. It's kind of like this:
A guy takes his blonde girlfriend to a football game for the first time. After the game he asked her how she liked the game.

"Oh, I really liked it," she said, "but I just couldn't understand though why they were killing each other for 25 cents."

"What do you mean?"

"All they kept screaming was: Get the quarter back! Get the quarter back!"
Really, I don't care, but we usually watch the Super Bowl - mostly for the commercials. My problem is that I'm so used to ignoring commercials or getting up to do something else, that I forget to watch the commercials even when I want to watch them. Luckily I have a son who understands this, and he sent me a link so I can watch the Super Bowl commercials on my computer whenever I want. He just sent this to me on Yahoo Messenger - all the way across the dining room from his computer to mine. Don't you love how we communicate in this house?

Trip of a Lifetime

I'm really not sure why, but every time I see this commercial I just have to laugh.

The thing about commercials is that I usually don't watch them at all. There are times when I actually pay attention to a commercial, and when I start laughing at it, Jeffrey usually looks at me funny and asks, "Is that the first time you've seen that?" Well, yeah. Why? Has it been on a lot?

Of course, after I notice a commercial, it seems that I start seeing it all. the. time. I still don't usually know what it is they are advertising, though. Commercials as entertainment. Sometimes they're pretty good. Commercials for selling me stuff? Not so much.
