4 Ways to Be a Better Web Designer

Are you feeling uninspired with your current web designs? Do you need something to boost your creativity or kick-start your productivity? 1. Get New Software

If you feel like your designs are becoming too boring or too similar, it's time to break out of your shell and try something new.    Don't be afraid to ask others for feedback. It doesn't matter if you're soliciting the opinions of clients, friends or random web users; in fact, getting advice from multiple sources is better than getting it from one. Just make sure that you actually listen to the suggestions that you're given. If everyone agrees that pink text on a red background is horrible, don't argue with them.

It Looks Good Enough to Eat

I'm supposed to be helping a friend of mine update her website and organize it better.  So far I've taken pictures of some of her products, looked at a few templates we could possibly use, and done some research.

Some of that research involves looking at other similar sites to see how they're organized.  She sells uncured natural meats and Alaskan salmon, so I've been checking out this website where you can seafood order online, and I forgot about the organization and started looking at the pictures.  Do you see how good that smoked salmon looks in that picture?  I am going to have to figure out how to take better pictures of the products - pictures that people just can't resist.  The pictures on this site certainly have me wanting to add some of these things to my cart - the Smoked Salmon, Sockeye Salmon Maple BBQ Kebobs, and the Sockeye Salmon Burger with Ginger Dill to name just a few.

I'll have to keep looking at these pictures and hopefully find some online information about food design and photography.  Any suggestions for that?  I have a hard enough time getting decent pictures for my recipe blog.  Half the time my problem is that I don't think to take a picture until after we've eaten the food, so at least that problem is solved, since the whole point will be the pictures.  Maybe getting to eat the food afterwards would just be a bonus!

Do You Know How to Sell Online?

I can build some basic web pages, usually starting with a template I like and then tweaking the HTML to make it do what I want and look the way I want.  I was really thrilled when I discovered CSS because I could do so many more things.  Did I ever tell you that part of the reason I started blogging was that I wanted to play with the blog design?  It wasn't that I actually had something I wanted to say!  Of course, I end up saying a lot more than I play with the design...

Anyway, mostly I've done personal web pages and web pages for our church, and I've done a few pages for some organizations.  Mostly it's all volunteer because I enjoy doing it, but that also means it isn't always at the top of my priority list.  I get to it when I get to it.  It's always fun to learn something new, though - like the time somebody wanted me to include a form on our webpage so people could register online.  I'd never done anything with a form before, but I pulled out my HTML book, and I figured out how to create a form.  Now, of course, Google makes it simple enough that anybody can do it.

One thing I've never learned anything about or had an opportunity to mess with (and there are lots, really) is shopping cart software.  Not having any kind of business where I'm trying to sell something, I've never had to learn how to sell online. I've never even sold anything on eBay - which is a different thing altogether, I know.  I really should do some research, because I've had a couple people ask me if I knew anything about it, and I've had to tell them no.  I can make their web pages look pretty, but I don't know how to make sure they can get the products to the customers.  Which is kind of the reason they want a web page in the first place...

Any suggestions for what works best?  From what little research I've done, it looks like there are several options out there.  The trick is in finding the right plan and then being able to try it.  I don't know if they all do it, but this one at 1ShoppingCart lets you try it free for 4 weeks with no risk.  Of course I'm not going to try it unless I have something to sell, or somebody who wants to be able to sell online, but it's good to know the option is there should somebody ask again.

Things have certainly come a long way. I remember the first time I attempted to build a website.  It was very, very simple.  It had to be really, because there was no drag and drop, no WYSIWYG, just plain text HTML.  Thankfully there was plenty of how-to information online to help me with the HTML.  I printed a bunch of it out for easy reference, and I went to work.  Unfortunately, nobody told me that music which started automatically when the page loaded was tacky, or that images needed to be optimized to help them load faster.  Back then that was really important because practically everyone had dial-up internet access!  Who remembers that?

I've learned a lot since then, and things have gotten a lot easier, too.  Now there are sites that let you easily create your own website - no HTML knowledge required.  Anyone can have a web page.  If you can send an email and arrange elements on a page - seriously, just type in the information you want to share and drag and drop it where you want it to be - then you can build a web site.  Add modules like games, forums, or photo albums.  Include gadgets and widgets, and even integrate popular web services like YouTube, Flickr, and Paypal.  Then, arrange everything on the page the way you want it.  Change your mind, and it's super simple to move things around again, until you get it just right.  And for people like me, there's still the option to tweak the HTML, meaning I can still have complete control.  But if you don't know anything about HTML, that's perfectly fine.

I remember signing up for my first web page ages ago, mostly because I wanted to 'play' with html.  Yeah, I'm weird like that.  But if the idea of learning html or css has you thinking it's too complicated to make a free website, think again. Nowadays anybody who wants to can have a free website, and you really don't need to learn any of that stuff.  Pretty much, if you can write an email, then you can have a web page.

I've been playing with a site called ucoz.com a little bit, just to see what it can do.   It uses CMS (Content Management Systems) to make everything work, which basically means it controls things in the background while you get to do the fun stuff like adding content.  It also gives you a lot more control over your site than the old free sites.

You begin by selecting a template for your site design, and there are hundreds of them.  Then begin adding modules to your site, such as photo albums, guest books, blogs, and even online games.  Modules are web applications that can be added and combined in many ways, allowing you to have anything from a very simple home page to a very complex page.  All the modules can be adapted to fit many needs.  You're just limited by your imagination.  Beyond that, you can add thousands of gadgets and hundreds of widgets, allowing you to do any number of things like add your twitter feed to your page or a sampling of your latest Flickr photos.  Then just use the visual editor to add your content - remember, if you can type an email, you can do this.  Drag and drop you modules around to make the page yours.

And people like me, who like to get into the html can do that too, so you can have complete control of your pages.  Ucoz offers basically unlimited disk space, so you can have as many pages and files as you need.  You can upload files with your FTP program or through the online File Manager as well as creating them online with the Page Editor.  You can have multiple 'users' who can update pages and publish articles or whatever, so it would be great for collaborative sites.  Once you start playing with it, I think you'll find all kinds of fun things you can do, because I don't have time to list everything, and I don't really understand everything it can do, yet.  There's a lot of information and help available in the support community forum, so if you don't know how to do something, somebody should be able to help.

Money-making Opportunities Wanted

Have any of you tried any of these Franchise websites?  I am honestly not sure how they work, but I just added up all my blogging income from last year, and I'm thinking I need to either start blogging more, or I need to branch out.  I was watching the demo video on Empowerkit.com, and all that stuff about social networking, facebook integration, and website editing make sense to me.  It's all the rest I'm not sure about.

I'm guessing that's because the people who know about franchises and MLM and are looking to create all these user-friendly, customer-grabbing websites already know about the franchise and MLM side of it - but creating websites and controlling style and social media aren't what they want to spend their time on.  They'd rather let Freshout Web Product Development or somebody else handle it for them.

Me, I think I'll just stick to blogging and maybe baking?  How much would you pay for a loaf of home-baked bread?  Or to have me tweak your CSS?

New Year, New Computer

Now that I've got a new computer...  Oh, I didn't mention that I got a new computer?  Well, I did.  The old one was so slow, and the hard-drive was just so full.  I mean, what do you expect?  It was only 40GB.  At the time I got it, 4 years ago this summer, that seemed plenty big.  Nowadays the computers all come with 250GB hard-drives or bigger.  This one is 500GB.

Anyway, now that I've got a new, much faster, computer I can actually get things done, or so I'm hoping.  Blogging, photo editing, web product development, typing up minutes for the Library Board, downloading music from Amazon, whatever I need to do.  It's so much faster and easier.  Of course, I do need to take some time to organize and transfer all my files from the old computer.  I took care of my email and photos right away, but I have quite a few other files to go through.  Of course, I haven't needed those files in the last few weeks, so maybe I should just leave them on my portable hard-drive.  I'll probably just do that, but the problem is that I already copied most of them onto the portable hard-drive sometime, but I can't remember exactly when, and I'm not sure which files are on the hard-drive and which ones aren't - so I need to take some time to go through them.  Either that, or just copy all of the folders and deal with it later.  Then I could clean off the old computer and figure out what we want to do with it.  It will probably work a whole lot better if I take all the files off.  I might not even have to re-format the hard-drive to improve the functionality.

I really am enjoying having a computer that responds so much better and not having to worry about what I do with it or what I want to install for fear that I won't have enough hard-drive space.  I'm not ready to tackle a job with a San Francisco Web Development Agency, but I do need to update and re-design at least one website for our church, and I can play with some video editing, too.

While I'm at it, I think I'll download a new desktop wallpaper calendar from Smashing Magazine. These are so cool!  There are 65 free wallpapers to choose from for January, and I'm just having a really hard time choosing.  Actually, what I need to do is pick several and then have Cory show me how to get my computer to rotate through them all.  He told me he'd show me if I ever wanted to know.  Well, I want to know.

Browser Frustration

I've had a few comments recently on a couple other sites I have telling me that they're messed up in Opera.  I don't have Opera on this computer, so I couldn't check it - until I remembered that our downstairs computer has Opera.  So, this morning after the play I went down and checked them out.  They both looked OK to me.  Then I upgraded Opera to the latest version, and they still looked OK.  So I don't really know what the issue is, which means I can't do anything to fix it.

Also, I've been told that the pictures on this blog aren't showing up properly in Internet Explorer - though I haven't checked that out for myself because I just can't bring myself to open that browser unless absolutely necessary.  I'm not completely surprised, though, because IE is known for causing design problems.  Why Microsoft can't just play by the rules like everyone else, I just don't know.  It's really frustrating, because no matter how hard you try to get a site to look just right, chances are it's going to look wrong in IE.  And sometimes there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.  You might be able to decide exactly which web directory (or directories) you want to submit your site to, but you don't get to decide exactly what that site is going to look like on everyone's screen.  Yeah, frustrating.

And now Opera is causing problems for some people, and one of my other sites looks really messed up with Chrome, and I just don't know how to fix it.  If you're using IE or Opera, let me know how this site looks for you, as well as bcmom's kitchen and Congregational Fellowship, if you would.  Thanks.

Anything Worth Doing

Sometimes, the reason I'm good at things is the same reason I'm not so good.  I'm good at making web pages work and dealing with all the little details.  I'm good at putting together a wall calendar for the school district, again with all those little details.  I'm good at typing up the minutes for the Library Board meetings.  I'm good at all those things because I'm a perfectionist, and I'm willing to work at it until all those little details are right.

Then again, I'm not so good at those same things - because I'm a perfectionist.  Why?  Because it takes me so long to do things, because I can't publish or share, because I'm not finished until it's perfect.  Whether it's a book review, a murad review, or even a facebook status update, it has to be perfect.  Even after I post, I read it and edit, or delete and start over.  Imagine my life before computers - one messed up word, and the entire sheet of paper ended up in the trash can! 

Also, because all of this takes time, I put off doing things - until I have the time to do them right.  Some things would never get done if I didn't have deadlines, or friends who push me to just do it.  My friend Peggy is a good example of this.  We work on a Feast of Tabernacles website together.  She doesn't have the knowledge or the patience for all those details.  What she does is throw together the web pages with all the information, and then she uploads them to the server.   Then she knows I'll have to take care of all the details, because I won't be able to stand them until I tweak them all so that they're right.

And now, I've got some tweaking to do...

The School Needs a New Site

I got an interesting phone call today.  Our school District Administrator, Mr. S. called to tell me that they are planning to redesign the school website and are having some people come in on Thursday to do some training.  Apparently it's supposed to be really easy, which is just what they need.  He invited me because he recently found out that I built the current school website - I'd link to it, but frankly I'm a little embarrassed and don't really want to claim responsibility.  Oh, it was so much better than what they had before, and still is, but it's been several years - so many that I can't remember how many, and it's gone downhill since.  It really should have been redesigned ages ago.

I'm thinking I'll probably go to the training on Thursday, because I'm interested in seeing what they have in mind.  I hope it really is simple - something that faculty, teachers, or even students can put together and keep updated. When I did the website, I learned to use FrontPage and built it with that, because that's the program they had in the school, and that's what they were going to be using to update things.  Now I really don't like FrontPage at all - don't even have it on my computer - and I think they'll get a much better-looking site, without a bunch of bloated code, by going with something else. 

Mr. S. said maybe I'd have some suggestions or ideas for them, and maybe I will, because I've learned a thing or two since then, but I'm also thinking I might pick up a few things I can use, too.  You never know.

Need Some Design Help?

When it comes to designing a website or changing my blog theme, I'm not real good at starting from scratch. I need a good template or theme that I can mess with and make my own. I need a place to start.

I'm thinking it's about time to change the theme for this blog, but I haven't found the right template to start with yet, and I know it will take more time than I really want to spend right now. I'm not using Wordpress (yet) but if I was, something like this premium wordpress theme from wpremix looks like it would be really helpful. It comes with 50 designed and coded page templates, and it sounds like it is really easy to tweak them and remix them.

Along with the templates, there are also some additional add-ons, color schemes, and tutorials. You can even make money by signing up to be an affiliate or helping people tweak their templates, if you're an expert at that kind of thing. Affiliates earn 50% on every sale, which sounds pretty good. I wonder if you sign up as an affiliate and then purchase the theme pack through your affiliate link that means it ends up costing half as much? Worth looking into, right?

Recipes and Subdomains

The first web page I ever put together was to share my recipes. It started with a cool background, and I had big plans - organize and share all my recipes. I've shared and organized some recipes, but not nearly enough of them, because I keep losing recipes. I was hoping to avoid that. There are just so many! The background was still cool, though.

I have been hosting my recipe web pages on the server space we get from our ISP. Unfortunately, I built the site using FrontPage, and the server doesn't respond well to that. It was fine when I first uploaded it, but updating is a pain because I have to delete the whole thing and re-upload every time I want to change anything. So, I've been meaning to re-do the page and stop using FrontPage - just haven't done it, and in the meantime, I've lost more recipes because they didn't get posted. I know they're around here somewhere, on paper, but I usually can't find them when I want to use them.

So, I'm trying again. I decided to go with a new blog, and I'm going to move all the recipes from the original page and hopefully keep up with new recipes, too. I set up a subdomain to use for it, too - recipes.alwaysbcmom.com - and it worked!

Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think. I haven't gotten all the recipes moved, but I have a plan. That's half the battle, right?

Cheap Flights Widget for Your Website

My friend Peggy and I work together on a website listing Feast* sites around the world. We do our best to make sure feastgoers everywhere can find the perfect Feast site. I just became aware of this Cheap Flights Map Widget today, and I think it would be a great addition to the site. It's a Flash widget that can be fully customized using the simple controls and the Maps Code Wizard. You can either select both a departure and a destination point, only one of them, or leave both ends open. Then the widget can be added to any website so that visitors can find cheap flights right from the website. The size of the map widget can also be customized, so that it fits nicely on the web page, and there are 20 languages to choose from.

I think it would be really handy to have a widget on each page, with the destination selected so that visitors can input their local airport and search for cheap flights to that destination. It would be an added convenience to help people choose the site they want to attend and to find the best price for their flights.

The widget is free, and it uses Skyscanner, which is the most powerful and flexible flight search engine in Europe. Skyscanner provides instant online price comparisons on over 300,000 flights and over 600 airlines. Also, with Skyscanner, users can browse flights without having to enter specific dates, departures or even destinations. I love that part. Sometimes I don't really have a destination in mind, but if the right flight came available, you just never know... I might decide to plan a trip.

You can even add this widget to your desktop so you can easily keep an eye out for cheap flights.

What Should Have Been a Quick Job...

...took me half the morning.

Why do the simplest things seem to take so much time? I needed to update a website this morning - change 4 numbers on 2 pages, upload the changed pages, done. Well, it should have worked that way, but when I changed the numbers and uploaded the pages, suddenly there was no home page. When I went to the page, the server told me there was no such page. What?

So I checked the files on the server and found that FrontPage had added an extra file and made that the home page. The only problem was that I never created that file, and the browser wouldn't read it. I kept trying to fix the navigation, making my page the home page, but it wouldn't listen to me - until I just deleted the extra file. Then I had to play mess fight with the navigation to get it back to the way it was before. I just don't know why things can't work the way they are supposed to - quickly and the first time - so I don't have to spend so much time on simple tasks.

Design Information I Can Use

I originally started my blogs because I saw it as a way to play with layout and design. I really didn't have a clue what to write or what to write about, but I had fun tweaking the layouts. I still have a hard time settling on a template or design and sticking with it. I'm always on the lookout for a new one I can work with. Of course, since I've actually started focusing on content and marketing, I don't seem to have as much time to mess with the design. Still, don't be too surprised if one of these days I change everything around.

When it comes to the layout of my blog or any web pages I put together, I need a starting point. I've never been good with just starting from scratch and building anything I'm happy with. When I found this blog covering web design topics, Stylish Design, I thought it would be a good resource to help me with my layout and design needs. I'm seeing more information here about search engine optimization, Google Adsense, PageRank, and how a blog can help your business than actual design information. There is an article on designing a web page with Google Page Creator, which looks very helpful. It doesn't even need to specifically apply to the Google Page Creator because the information could apply to the set up and organization of any web page. I'm guilty of usually jumping in without so much thought on organization, so I could use some of these tips.

Stylish Design is split into various categories such as, How to, SEO, Internet, Tools, and Web Design, making it easy to search through the topics of interest. While my original impression was that this blog was about design and layout - making your pages look pretty, I see that it's more. According to the Stylish Design blog, website design is creation and arrangement of web pages. It's about the organization and structure and about the content, definitely information I can use.

Update: Now it's a seller of beauty supplies.  I suppose that's important, too...

Basic html Lessons in my Google Docs

I went through my computer and found the lessons I took from Sony 101 on basic html. What I have learned from taking those lessons (besides what they teach) is to save the lessons, either into an html document or a Word (or Open Office) document so that I can refer to them later. Otherwise I can not access them after the course is over. In case any of you are interested, I just uploaded them to my Google Docs, and I'll link to them here. Please note that none of the images work, but all the important information is there.

I also discovered a new thing about Google Docs. I can email my documents. They gave me a special email address, and I can either start a new document by sending an email, and the subject line will be used as the title of the document and the body of the message entered into the document. Or, I can just send an email and attach the documents I want to upload. I hadn't noticed this before, so I just had to try it. I started an email, attached all 6 of these lessons, and hit send. As quick as that, they were all available in my Google Docs. Then I just had to open them, click Publish, and copy the links here.

Free Hit Counters

I'm finally putting a counter on my blog. I know I have all kinds of widgets to tell me who's visiting and where they're coming from, but I think it will be fun to watch the numbers increase. I've used different free counters before, but they often have some random text underneath them. This one from Free Counters promises to have no visible advertising. Besides just counting my visitors, my free hit counter is going to give me information about my visitors such as what browser they use and what operating system they have, and more. The information is available any time I want to look at it, and it's all free. I can create and customize up to 10 free counters.

They have other free tools for webpages and blogs, such as polls, clocks, and search engines, but I haven't had time to check them out yet.

Learning html

I got an email the other day reminding me that January courses are now enrolling at My 101 by Sony. I've taken several free courses there, and I like to check and see what's available. If only I had the time, I would sign up for, and finish this time, the Graphic Design for Non-Designers course. One lesson a week isn't bad, and you get to work at your own pace, but last time I signed up for that one, I just didn't finish it.

I was hoping they were offering a basic html course that I could recommend to those of you who want to learn some html. I took one several years ago, and it was really good. Since they aren't offering that one, I thought maybe this page where you can start learning html would be helpful. Then, after you learn the basics, you can move on to advanced html, if you want to. They have all kinds of information here, whether you want to go through the tutorials or just use it as a reference. And of course, like all good things, it's free.

I'm not sure if he really did or not, but Cory was talking about taking Web Page Design in school next year - so he could get credit for doing nothing. Unfortunately, that's exactly what would happen. Beth took that class last year, I think. It's a one semester class, and it took them the whole first quarter to learn the most basic stuff. Apparently they don't have a text book for this class because there should be enough information on the Internet. Yes, there is plenty of information on the Internet, but the teacher does not go out and find it. They'd be ahead if he just pointed the students to this page and turned them loose. Of course, that is assuming the students have some initiative and aren't just in the class to get credit for doing nothing.

Lunarpages to the Rescue

I recently got my own domain, but I haven't taken that next step and moved away from Blogger. I'm not sure I need to, but those who have paid hosting highly recommend it. They say they have much more control over their blogs and their templates. I will probably do it one of these days, but in the meantime, I'm going to pay attention to what everyone else says about their hosting provider. Hopefully that will help me to make the right decision when the time comes.

I learned that there's at least one host out there that I DO NOT want to go with. I read this blog post - Lunarpages Offer for DreamHost Customers - and found out that Dreamhost has been overcharging their customers and then laughing about it. Some of those debits or charges have been for up to $9000. Others are not quite so high, but any unexpected charge on your credit card can be catastrophic, especially for the little guy. And then to have "customer service" just laugh about it instead of fixing the problem? No wonder hundreds of Dreamhost customers are leaving and finding a new hosting provider.

I imagine that is a great relief for those customers who feel Dreamhost has treated them badly and that they are not going to do anything about it.

Besides, it looks like Lunarpages is a pretty good host. They offer 15,000GB of Transfer & 1,500GB of storage, free domain name & 10 add-on domains for $6.95 a month + loads more - and that's just the basic plan. I'm going to admit that I don't understand all those extras, but it certainly sounds like the customer service staff at Lunarpages is ready, willing, and able to help get things set up and running smoothly.

As a potential hosting provider, Lunarpages is rapidly moving to the top of my list. In fact, they just moved to the very top of my list. They provide free web hosting for educational purposes to all K-12 public schools in the U.S. and that includes one free domain!
