Paris Hilton was on Ellen yesterday talking about her new movie The Hottie and the Nottie. She described it as a sweet, romantic comedy, but, seriously, doesn't it sound more like a porno flick? Wait, didn't she already do one of those?
Of course, I was in the other room, so I was visualizing the title as, The Haughty and the Naughty.
Then again, that could just be another name for one of those daytime dramas.

Enter to Win $50,000 for College
Remember how I admitted that I watch those daytime dramas? They're not a complete waste of time at all! I just found out that As the World Turns and Guiding Light, two of the shows I watch, are sponsoring a $50,000 College Education Sweepstakes. By watching either or both of those shows on February 11, 13, and 15 - that's next week - and knowing which character spoke the opening line of the day, you can be entered to win $50,000 for your child's college education.
You better believe I'll be watching. We could certainly use $50,000 to help pay for college. All entries must be submitted by 6pm ET on February 22.

The Book Meme
I have been tagged by Vic Grace @ Cariboo Ponderer for the Book Meme. Yes, I know I've been tagged by some of the rest of you for other memes, and I really will catch up, but this one is about a book, and I just couldn't resist.
Here are the rules:
- Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. (No cheating!)
- Find Page 123.
- Find the first 5 sentences.
- Post the next 3 sentences.
- Tag 5 people.
I'm reading "I'm not mad, I just hate you!" by Roni Cohen-Sandler, Ph.D. and Michelle Silver. I'm actually starting page 121, but looking at page 123, I get:
What was I supposed to do? At first the challenge of choosing battles wisely can make every day feel like an uphill climb. You may find that even after weighing the facts carefully, you still aren't sure whether confronting your daughter on a specific issue is right or wrong.OK, Misty, Tammy, Jenn, Carrie, and Lady Banana - what's on page 123 of your books?
Red Roses plus Chocolate equals True Love
Valentine's Day is probably the busiest day of the year for the flower shops. Mostly I'm pretty cheap, and it seems like such a waste to buy something that's just going to die anyway.
Of course, that doesn't stop me from ooohing and aaahing over all the rose bouquets and arrangements I've been looking through at 1800Flowers.com. Yes, I know it's terribly traditional, but I have this thing for red roses, and do they ever have some gorgeous red roses. Add some chocolate like in these One Dozen Red Roses with Godiva® Truffles, and I am practically drooling.
If roses aren't your thing, they also have organic fruit gifts, teddy bears, plants, and more. I like the idea of the plants, because they're not going to die - at least not right away. It all depends on how well you take care of them. A plant would be the right kind of gift for a practical person like me, and my wonderful husband knows me well enough to know that. No, I wouldn't kill him if he got me roses and chocolate, but buying me the plant would show me that he really knows me. That's true love.

Sky Watch Friday (#9)
We've had quite a bit of snow this week, and the skies have been mostly gray and overcast. So, since I haven't seen anything that jumped out at me this week, I started going through the pictures on my computer. This one was taken one morning about this time last year. Sometimes it's hard to roll out of bed in the morning, but skies like these make it all worthwhile.
If you enjoy looking at the sky as much as I do, you'll want to check out Sky Watch Friday.
Play a Little Game or Two
Frigga posted a couple of time wasters today - like I needed something else to waste my time on. Thanks a lot, Frigga! Actually , they were both pretty fun, and I'll probably go back and mess with them again. It reminded me of this little game someone sent me a while back. I sent it to my daughter when she was learning to drive, and, most importantly, learning to parallel park. She didn't think it would help her at all, but I thought it was fun, and addictive.
Let me know what you think.
Another game I really like, and don't feel is a total waste of time, is Free Rice. It's a vocabulary game, where you can not only improve your vocabulary, but feed hungry people, too. For every word you get right, they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. I find that it is quite addictive. I couldn't even finish this blog post without playing long enough to donate 200 grains of rice! Sometimes I just have to close the tab and walk away.
Have fun.

Time to Start Thinking About the Garden?
With all the snow and cold weather, I really haven't thought about gardening. Seriously, you can hardly even tell I have gardens out there - except for the old tomato cages that I didn't remove in the Fall. Mostly, when it comes to gardening, I plant some seeds, hope they come up, pull weeds occasionally, and hope I get some good vegetables. I really don't know anything about hydroponics, but it sounds interesting. It's a whole system of gardening that is supposed to save work, provide higher yields, and eliminate the need for pesticides. I know I hate when the bugs eat my beans, but I really do not want to use any kinds of pesticides on them. I also don't particularly like pulling weeds, so if I can avoid that, I'm interested. Cory used to like helping me with the gardening, but then he got older and lost interest. I guess he didn't like pulling weeds, either.
HID Hut is a source of discount gardening supplies. They have everything you'd need to get started with hydroponics, and the best prices online. The list of hydroponic gardening tips and articles looks really helpful, too.

No School Again Today
Cory came downstairs last night and said there was no school today. His friend heard it on the news, so he looked it up on the Internet. Sure enough, they decided at about 8pm last night that there would be no school today. Shortly after that, Jeffrey and I went out to shovel the driveway again, since he had to get up extra early and go to DePere today. The snow had stopped. The wind had died down. The storm was over. So why did they cancel school? It makes no sense. There are a few other schools closed today, and several that had a 2 hour delay. I can understand the delay in order to give the plows time to clear the roads, if they didn't do it overnight. But why does school need to be closed?
Having my kids home from school two days in a row could make me start looking for hotels Las Vegas just to get away, except there really hasn't been too much fighting, and it was convenient having someone else around to help shovel. Besides, even the airport was closed yesterday, so I couldn't get out of town anyway.
The kids will pay for these snow days in the end, because they always have to made up somewhere - usually at the end of the school year. I'm sure that when I was in school we had a certain number of snow days built into the school calendar. Winter = Snow. It's a given. How can they not plan for snow days?

Drama Again
It started snowing Tuesday afternoon, and of course, Beth had to work. So, when she called when she got to work and she was obviously upset, my first thought was that something had happened on the drive to work. No, she was fine. The problem was that she had finally heard from Tim (the boyfriend) and he was in jail. She'd been all mad at him when she left because she hadn't heard from him all day. Now she knew why.
In between work and on her breaks she managed to find out that he was in jail because he had failed to pay some outstanding tickets. I'm not sure what all he has to pay, and he's gotten some of them dropped, but a lot of this is coming from last year when he just up and disappeared for a couple months. He was supposedly getting things back on track, but then he disappeared for a while around Thanksgiving, and he got behind. Now the whole thing has to be paid off or they're going to keep him in jail for a month. I fail to see the logic in putting someone in jail because they haven't paid - because obviously locking them up where they can't work and make any money to pay will solve that problem.
Beth wanted to know if we could help him out, because the family he's living with can't afford to pay the whole fine. Looking at Tim's track record, I really don't trust him to pay us back. Since Tim also works for the guy he's living with (Jim), he can garnish his wages to be sure he gets his money back. So, we agreed to pay half, and then Jim will pay us back from Tim's wages. If he learns something from this and finally gets his life back on track that will be good. Beth seems to think she has a future with this guy, and we keep asking, "Is this the way you want to live?"
