Heads or Tails - Black or White

This week's theme/prompt is:

HEADS *OR* TAILS - Black *OR* White

If someone gives me the choice between black or white, I always choose black.  What's my favorite color?  Black.  Of course I like to add some white and red to my black, but still black is my favorite.  That got me to thinking.  Is black really a color?  I've heard that it's really the absence of color, and colors aren't really colors but just the way the light is reflected and the way our eyes perceive it.

So I searched "Is black a color?" - and I'm still not really sure if black is a color or not, because I found this very interesting page all about black, the meaning of black, and how to use black with other colors.  I guess it does say that black is 'the absence of color'.

If black isn't your color, and only 7% of people who answered their poll chose black as their favorite color, there are links for lots of other colors, too.

*How many times can you find the word 'black' in this post? (counting this one, of course)

Does Michael Phelps wear a Tag Heuer Aquaracer?

When I heard Tag Heuer makes the tag heuer aquaracer, I just had to ask, does Michael Phelps wear a Tag Heuer Aquaracer? I mean, he is the most famous aquaracer, or swimmer, ever. Still, even though a watch called the aquaracer would most likely survive a dip in the pool, it probably wouldn't be smart for Michael to wear it while swimming a race, would it? He'd have to stick with wearing a stylish watch outside of the pool. The Watchery has 20 different styles of the aquaracer watch, and I bet any of them would look great on Michael Phelp's wrist.

Jeffrey is always looking at big watches like the aquaracer sports watches, but for him I think they're too clunky. Besides, he doesn't like swimming, so it's not like he needs a watch that is water resistant to 900 feet. I like something more like the one pictured here - something nice and simple.

I bet Jeffrey would have fun browsing through these Tag Heuer watches, and he probably wouldn't pick out the same ones I would. The thing about buying watches at theWatchery.com is that, when you buy one, you get one free. So, he could pick one he likes, and get a free one that I like, or something like that. The Watchery has a great selection of Tag Heuer watches as well as plenty of other designer watches at significant savings over retail.

We Have Visitors

Jeffrey's mom and her husband (Mom & Fred) are here visiting. They live in Arizona, so we don't get to see them very often - so it's very good to see them! They pull their own house (travel trailer) behind them, with their own bed, bathroom, and kitchen, so they're pretty easy guests to get along with. We'd be happy to have them in here, too, but it is convenient for them not to have to carry clothes and toiletries and everything in and out when they get here and again when they leave. And we would have had to kick one of the kids out of their rooms, probably Cory, but I don't think he'd complain too much since it means his grandparents are visiting.

I was going to make some crockpot oatmeal yesterday for breakfast, because I thought Fred would enjoy it, but they have breakfast in the trailer. So, I didn't make the oatmeal - but I did make some extra coffee, which Fred appreciated.

We do get to have dinner together - tonight Jeffrey brought home some rotisserie chicken from Sam's. We're cooking some rice, baking some butternut squash and apples, and sauteing some zucchini to go with it. Jeffrey brought home a bottle of wine, and I'm even thinking about lighting some candles.

I'm also trying to talk Mom & Fred into coming in for breakfast tomorrow. We're having pancakes.

Zits are for Teenagers

All right - I'm 43, and I'm still getting zits, and I'm tired of it. I thought that was a teenage thing. I guess I was wrong there. I'm not sure what the best acne treatment is, but I do know that I need to do a better job of washing my face. It's not so bad when I wash my face when I take my shower in the morning and again before bed, but recently I've been skipping it at night - if I didn't put any makeup on during the day and if I actually didn't get in the shower until later in the day. I'm going to have to get back on a regular schedule.

So far Beth hasn't had many problems with zits - lucky her. I hope it stays that way, and she doesn't get to my age wondering when they go away.

Lucky Day

At the Harvest Fest last weekend, we found a guy selling jerky - beef and bison - and giving out free samples. So of course we had to try it. He had several different flavors, but the one that caught my attention was HOT. I tried it, and it really was hot - even for me - not so hot that I didn't like it, just hot enough that I agreed it was hot. So I grabbed a sample for Cory and took it down to him where he was working. He took one bite and decided we should buy him some.

We headed back down there before too long to get him some, and decided to get him a $5 bag. We told the guy who was selling the jerky that we were buying it for our son, and he asked if he liked hot stuff. We thought he was just double checking to make sure we knew the stuff was HOT. We said, yes he loves hot stuff, told him we took the sample down to him earlier and he just had to have some more. That's when he put the $5 worth of jerky into the bag, sealed it up, and then said, "Pretend it's his lucky day." Then he proceeded to package up all the little pieces and spices from the bottom of the bag/box and give that to us, too.

He said it was the end of the day, and he was just getting ready to close up - and timing is everything, I guess. So Cory has quite a bit of jerky seasoning with little pieces of jerky in it that he can eat or sprinkle on other things. They way Cory likes to spice things up, it's the perfect thing for him. Pretend it's his lucky day? It was definitely his lucky day!

www.worldsbestjerky.com - this is the web address on the business card. It's not working right now, but I'm hoping it will soon. We just might need some more jerky - soon.

Zenni Optical has Nerdy Glasses, Too

Cory said tonight that he wants new eyeglasses. It's not that his prescription has changed. It's that he wants a change of style. I think his current glasses are just fine, but he's gotten involved in this 'nerdfighter' group online, and he thinks he needs nerdy glasses.

Ordinarily, buying new glasses just because you want a new style wouldn't be feasible, but with glasses starting at $8 at Zenni Optical, it just might be possible. Even their most expensive ones are cheaper than what you get at the eye doctor's or even Wally World. I always hate having to spend so much (hundreds of dollars) for glasses, so I love the idea of being able to get them for so much less. Zenni Optical sells their own glasses straight to the public, with no middleman - and they pass those savings on to their customers. I love savings!

I'm not sure if these glasses are nerdy enough for Cory, but I hear that Zenni has some new styles, so I bet he could find some he likes, and with Zenni's prices, he could have more than one pair. I need to get my eyes checked (still) and find me some, too. Shipping is only $4.95, no matter how many pairs you order, so we might as well go crazy, right?

You can read some customer opinions from the mention of Zenni Optical on the Clark Howard show. It sounds like people are very happy with their Zenni Optical purchases.

No nerdy glasses for me, just in case you were wondering. I'm a bargain hunter, not a nerdfighter.

Sky Watch Friday (#41)

It's (almost) Friday again, and that means
Sky Watch Friday!

I saw these clouds and jet trail out my back door Wednesday evening, right about sunset.

If you enjoy looking at the sky as much as I do, you'll want to check out Sky Watch Friday. You can enjoy skies from around the world!

Come on, People

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA - MAY 6: Misty May-Trean...Image by Getty Images

I'm amazed that Cloris Leachman is still on Dancing with the Stars. She's funny and all, but seriously, some other couples who had more of a chance to actually win have already been voted off. I didn't think Kim Kardashian was very good, but still better than Cloris.

I guess as long as Misty May Treanor is still there, I'll be happy - though I've really been enjoying some of the other celebrities, too, like Warren Sapp, Brooke Burke, and Cody Linley. I've actually spread my votes around a little - though I'm pulling for Misty, mostly.

Next week, hopefully we'll be saying later, gator to Cloris.

When my niece was smaller, she used to say agulator instead of alligator. My kids look at me funny when I say it that way.

It's Good to Have Insurance

Beth has gone to the doctor several times this year because she started having some episodes where her heart started beating too fast. She really hadn't said much about it, but she mentioned it to the nurse practitioner when she went in for a check-up, so she checked it. Beth ended up having to wear a heart monitor for a month, and then the results were sent to a cardiologist, and she had to go see him. He said it was an electrical thing in her heart. It gets in a loop or there's an extra loop or something, and it causes the heart to beat too fast.
The heart has 4 compartments, or chambers. The walls of the heart squeeze together (contract) to push blood through the chambers. The contractions are controlled by an electrical signal that begins in the heart's natural "pacemaker" (called the sinoatrial node).
from familydoctor.org

The doctor recommends surgery to fix it. It sounds like a rather simple procedure, at least the way they explain it, but Beth does not want surgery. And there's usually no convincing Beth of something she doesn't want to be convinced of. Jeffrey and Beth are going to see another doctor next week to see if she'll feel more comfortable with him and to get a second opinion on her options.

The ones she's seen so far say that if she doesn't get the surgery, the episodes will happen more and more often. Eventually she may not have a choice because it can cause her heart to become enlarged, and we've explained to her that now, while she has insurance, would be a good time to do it. Who knows what kind of insurance she might have in the future, or even if she'll be able to get coverage due to having a 'pre-existing condition' as they say.

Hopefully she'll be able to get NC health insurance, or good insurance wherever she lives, but what if she can't? I feel really bad for people who don't have insurance or can't get it. Every time we get a bill from the doctor, I read it to see how much it would have cost if we didn't have insurance, and then I'm very thankful that we have it. The costs still add up, but they could be so much worse.
