You Don't Have to Pay a Lot for Glasses

Maybe.  There are lots of cute frames available at Zenni Optical, so the hardest part is deciding which one (or two) to order.  If you think getting cheap eyeglasses means you have to give up on style, you'd be wrong!  The only thing you're giving up is the over-large price.  The last time I ordered glasses from Zenni Optical, I paid about $10 for a pair, and I loved them!  And, I got lots of compliments on them, too - to which I usually responded, "$10 at Zenni Optical!"  This pair I like here is $29.95 - that includes the frame and light 1.57 index single vision lenses.  Now that I need bifocals, they'll cost a bit more, but they're still a lot cheaper than I could get them anywhere else.

How does Zenni do it?  No middlemen, no retail overhead, and practically no advertising budget,(they leave it to satisfied customers to spread the word).  They do not pay for or sell expensive, or even inexpensive, brand names, but only their own manufactured brand ZENNI.  They're high quality glasses anyone would be happy to wear.

I believe in saving money any time, but with the current economy, it's extremely important. Glasses are something that, if you need them, you need them.  You can't just not buy them.  But why should you have to spend a fortune? You could use the money you save on something else you want or need, like groceries, a night out, or a new pair of shoes!  That's why any time somebody mentions needing new glasses, I refer them to Zenni Optical.  Why pay a lot for glasses if you don't have to?  By the way, the free shipping on orders over $50 is still going on, so if you need new glasses...

I Need to Update My Reading List

Speaking of being busy, I was noticing that the list of books I'm reading (on the sidebar) is way out of date.  I haven't updated it since before I changed my blog template.  I've finished reading the books it says I'm reading now and read several others.  I just haven't kept the list updated.  Thankfully I have been keeping track through the WeRead app on facebook - except I just attempted to access my book list (shelf? do they call it a bookshelf?) on WeRead and got an error message: "Sorry, the application you were using is experiencing a problem. Please try again later."  So now I'm panicking.  What if my book list for 2011 is lost for good?

Considering I've been reading all my life and just started keeping track of the books I read a few years ago, I'm sure I'll survive even if I don't get access to my book list again.  But I will, right?  Right?

Whether I keep a list of all the books I read or just read them without keeping track, I'll still be reading - until I need reading glasses.  Actually, I guess I kinda do need reading glasses, since I had to get bifocals this year, but I can still read without them if I want to.   I might end up doing that even more, because it's harder to find cute eyeglass frames for women that can handle the progressive lenses - at least for me because I need such narrow frames for my face.  I can't imagine not reading.  I would probably put up with big, ugly glasses if I had to just so I was able to read.  Thankfully, I don't have to!

Right now I'm in between books, trying to decide what to read next, and I feel sort of lost - even though I haven't actually had time to sit down and read for a while, I still need to have something at least started.  Technically I say I'm reading the next Harry Potter book, Order of the Phoenix, but all that really means is that I finished the last one and pulled this one off the shelf.  For some reason, I took a break from Harry Potter and read a couple other books in between - books that aren't on my list yet!  As soon as I can get back into WeRead, I need to update that list in the sidebar and probably start working on my end-of-the-year reading list post.  It will be fun to find out how many books I read this year.

I'm a Hypocrite

OK, maybe that's not the exact right word...

After all my talk about saving money and buying glasses online (Zenni Optical!), I actually paid almost $200 for a pair of glasses.  Crazy, huh?  But I saved $360!  Or, at least, that's what the receipt says.  If we didn't have vision insurance, those same glasses would have cost over $500?  I don't think so!!  There's no way, no how I ever would have or could have done that.  I had a hard enough time with the (almost) $200.

But, I did it.  Jeffrey and I went to a couple places that are 'in-plan' for our insurance this evening.  Things are changing at work; insurance is changing, and we need to use our benefits, before the end of the month.  The first place we looked at didn't seem to have any frames under $200.  We didn't even ask about the lenses.  The second place had more reasonable frames - the insurance covers the first $120 and then 20% of any overage - so we actually found some that would be mostly covered by insurance.  Except that the first pair I picked out wasn't actually covered, or only about $45 would be covered.  I'm still not sure what that was about.  But then the girl we were working with found me a pair that I only had to pay $20 for after insurance.  And then we added the lenses...

The main reason I went ahead and got them was that I wanted to get the progressive lenses.  Well, I didn't actually want to get them, but I'm getting tired of looking under my glasses to read things, so I thought it was time.  Since I've not worn progressive lenses before, I thought it would be best to get them locally.  Later, if/when I get used to them, I can order some online if I want.  But this first time,  I think this will be best - even if it hurts to spend so much on one pair of glasses, when I know I could get them so much cheaper online.

So, don't do what I do - listen to what I say!  Save money, and buy your glasses online.  Unless, of course, you have a good reason.  Or lots of extra money.

I had been hearing about them for a while, and we finally ordered some glasses from Zenni Optical last summer.  Since shipping is $4.95 no matter how many pair you order, I ordered 2 pair for me, 1 for my husband, 1 for my son, and 1 for my friend - and we all love them!  They are perfect.  And did I mention that you can save money on prescription glasses by ordering from Zenni Optical?  A lot of money.  The best deal I've seen anywhere else is Walmart's $29 glasses for kids 18 and under - and they're only that cheap if you can find a pair of $9 frames you like.  Anti-glare is an additional $20, and the costs add up.  And if you're over 18, you can't get that deal.

I've been wearing glasses since sometime in grade school.  I didn't always like my glasses and used to carry them around, only slipping them on when I needed to see the blackboard and then taking them off again as soon as possible.  We couldn't afford to just go out and get me a new pair whenever I might have liked.  If only we'd had something like Zenni Optical!  Kids can have cute glasses for school - even 2 or 3 pair, whether for style or as a back-up in case a pair breaks - without ruining the budget.  And so can I!  You'll notice that I ordered 2 pair when we ordered our Zenni Optical glasses.  This time I need to order some bifocals or progressive lenses which are going to cost me a bit more, but still way cheaper than I can get them anywhere else.  Now, if I can just find some frames I like...

Bifocals?

Cory and I got our eyes checked last week, so it's time for new glasses.  I can still see with my current glasses, but my prescription has changed a bit - and it just might be time for bifocals.  I don't have to do it, but I find myself looking under my glasses more and more when I want to read something up close.  That gets a little hard on the eyes after a while.  Of course, I could just take my glasses off or push them up...

The eye doctor suggested the no-line progressives, but I'm not sure how that's going to work.  After our eye exam, Cory and I went to Walmart to look at glasses - which was good because they were running a  $29 special on glasses for kids 18 and under.  Since he's still 18 until the 15th, he qualified for that and found a pair of frames he really liked.  We added the anti-reflective coating, so his glasses ended up costing $49 - which is really good.  I looked at some frames, but all the ones I kind of liked were too small for progressive lenses.  I might have to go with the lined bifocals, just so I can get glasses that are small enough for my face.

First I just need to go out looking at some of the places that take our vision insurance, to see what I can find and how much they're going to cost me.  I don't think it will be too bad, actually.  The insurance covers frames and basic lenses, and it also covers a percentage of the upgrades for the thinner lenses I need (which were automatically included in the $29 kids' glasses - how unfair is that?) and even the progressive lenses - unlike a couple years ago when we last had vision insurance.  It's just a matter of finding something I like.

Even with the insurance, it will probably cost more than I'd like.  You know me, I like to save on glasses and contacts by ordering online.  However, for the first time getting bifocals, I really want to get them locally - so I have somebody to turn to if I need help getting them adjusted, in case I have a hard time getting used to them.  But, because I just couldn't resist, I went ahead and ordered a pair of single-vision glasses this morning.

The style is called Anna, so I figured they were supposed to be mine.  Black is not exactly my color, but I like the pink on the inside, and I'm thinking it softens the black a bit.  And, yeah, I think they're cute.  They'll be good for those times when I don't need to be reading small print, and the plastic frames are easier to get on when I've got the motorcycle helmet on.

Time to Get New Glasses (and Maybe Contacts)

Cory sent me a facebook message a few weeks ago letting me know he's going to run out of contacts soon and wondering if we just need to order some more or what.  Well, actually, those contacts lasted him about 2 years, and before he gets new ones, we're going to have to take him and get a new eye exam.  And then we can order him some more.

We had vision insurance, for the first time ever, a couple years ago - when we last got eye exams.  Cory got his exam and contacts paid for with the insurance, and we had to pay for a pair of prescription glasses.  My eye exam and part of the cost of my glasses was covered by the insurance, and Jeffrey's exam and glasses were covered, too.  My glasses just cost too much at a regular eye doctor/glasses place.  I even got my glasses at Sam's Club, and they cost too much.  But I've gotta have 'em.

We didn't get the vision insurance last year, figuring we don't need to get eye exams and new glasses every year, so we'll just get it every other year.  That means this year, just in time for Cory's new contacts, we have vision insurance and get to start the process all over again.  Considering they pay more for contacts, and that we can get really cheap glasses online, glasses that are as good as any we can find locally but so much cheaper, I'm thinking about getting some contacts too.  I'll let the insurance pay for the contacts and just order some glasses online.

I haven't worn contacts since Beth was a baby, but I'm thinking it might be time to try them again.  The only problem is that, with my prescription, I probably won't get two years' worth of contacts paid for by the insurance.

I got my new Flexi 8 hair clips today, the ones I won in Jenn's giveaway.  I was a little disappointed to see that one of the styles I wanted was out of stock, so they sent me a different one.  And then I noticed that it sort of matches my glasses.

How did they do that?

So, while I'm still kind of disappointed about not getting the dragonfly design I wanted, I think I'm going to like the one they did send.  With all those colors, it ought to go with just about everything.

The Real Zenni Optical Glasses

I know I said I'd show you the glasses once we got them from Zenni Optical, and then I got all excited about getting them, started wearing them, and then never got around to posting anything.  But it's not too late, right?

First, I got this pair of glasses for $9.95:

I didn't add any extra options like anti-glare or clip-on sunglasses, so that's what they cost - $9.95 plus shipping.  And this is the pair that I end up wearing practically all the time.  I really think they're fun, but I know I never would have let myself buy them for regular price, the price I would have to pay if I bought them at a regular glasses place.  Like I've said before, glasses for me usually cost closer to $200 or $300.  These just would've seemed too frivolous to spend that much and for them to be my only pair.

With Zenni Optical, I didn't have to make the choice.  I could have the fun glasses and get another, more reserved, pair too!  Both for less than I've ever spent on a pair of glasses as long as I can remember.  Here's my other pair:

 

This second pair is one of Zenni Optical's $8 frames.  I added anti-reflective coating for $4.95 and clip-on sunshades for $3.95 - so they cost about $17.  I like them, too.  They fit really well, and feel really nice on my face.  I paid more attention the last time I bought glasses, to the sizes of the lenses and the bridge, and the shape of the frames, and that made it easier to choose a pair online that would most likely fit and look good.  A good idea is to look at the glasses you already wear.  Most of them have the lens, bridge and temple sizes stamped on the inside - usually on the bridge and the temple.  That helps with finding a pair online that will work for you.

I was also worried about having to adjust them when they arrived or find someone to adjust them.  Amazingly, they came out of their hard plastic cases fitting perfectly!  And, if they hadn't, the ladies at my local Walmart optical are more than happy to adjust my glasses for me any time I go in.  I know because I've had to get the pair I bought from Sam's Club adjusted several times, and still haven't managed to get them as comfortable as these were right away. 

Imagine!  Two pairs of glasses for under $30!!  The ordering was easy.  We had our prescriptions and Pupillary Distance measurements from our eye doctors, so all I had to do was enter the information in.  If I had a question about anything, Zenni Optical had the answer.  All I had to do was mouse over the little question mark next to each item for a detailed explanation.  It could not have been easier, and I could not be happier with my Zenni Optical glasses.  I don't know why I waited so long to order them!  I will definitely be ordering from them again.

Besides my glasses, I also ordered a pair for my husband, a pair for my son, and a pair for a friend - 5 pair total.  Shipping is $4.95 no matter how many pair you order, so that worked out to $1/pair - and why we ordered all of them at once.  Everyone else is happy with their glasses, too.  I will post pictures of theirs later.

Stylin' Glasses!

I finally ordered some glasses from Zenni Optical.  What do you think?

Just kidding!  These glasses are from a few 20-some years ago.  I recently scanned a bunch of negatives from my old pictures, and every time this one comes up on my screensaver slideshow, I have to wonder what I was thinking when I picked those out.

I really did order glasses from Zenni Optical - after talking about it for ages.  My friend Peggy, owner of the negative scanner I used,  was going to order some, so I decided to pick some out so we could order together - and save on shipping.  Jeffrey and Cory each picked a pair out, too.

I only placed the order on Sunday evening, so we haven't gotten our glasses yet, but when we do, I'll be sure to let you know how we like them.

I'm Looking at Cheap Glasses from Zenni Optical

I keep meaning to order some glasses from Zenni Optical.  I've mentioned them before - the site where you can order eyeglasses for as little as $8.  Considering I don't usually get away without spending at least $300 when I buy glasses, the low cost Zenni Optical offers is really hard to resist.  Last year Jeffrey, Cory, and I all got new glasses.  We ended up getting them at Walmart and Sam's Club, and not necessarily looking for the best deal because, for the first time ever, we had vision insurance.  So, at least part of the cost was covered by insurance, and we got the rest back by using our FLEX plan, or whatever they call the health care savings plan.  We did have them note our PD (pupilary distance) on our prescriptions when we had our eyes checked, so we'd have all the information we need to order glasses online, so we could maybe get a second pair.

I haven't been entirely happy with the glasses I picked out, so I'm thinking it just might be time for that 2nd pair.  Oh, I can see fine, and they look nice, but I feel like I've had these adjusted so many times and just can't get them to feel right.  But there's no way I want to go spend a couple hundred dollars just to get a new pair, so I'm seriously thinking it's finally time to try some from Zenni Optical. 

My brother was just asking the other day if we had ordered any yet, because his glasses broke, and he needed a new pair.  I said no, but I do know of people who have ordered and love them - even better than the glasses they got from their local eyewear place.  (Drew of BenSpark.com for one)  I also just read this completely unpaid review by Eric Hammer, where he most definitely recommends Zenni Optical for cheap eyeglasses.  He's been buying all his glasses from Zenni for the past 8 years and never been disappointed.

New Glasses for Cory

Cory decided he really liked the contacts, so we went last week and bought him some. It's pretty nice with the vision plan. It only cost us around $25 for enough contacts to last him a year. While we were there, he also found a pair of glasses he liked, and we got them for around $100. They came in today, so he's all set - contacts for everyday wear and glasses for backup. The lady at the Walmart vision center also wrote down his pupil distance measurements so we can try ordering him some glasses online, for additional stylin', of course.

Me, I'm still trying to find a pair of glasses I like on my face. Of course, I've only looked there at Walmart and haven't gone anywhere else. It's just so hard for me to find something I like. I'd like to try ordering some online, too, but if I have this much trouble with glasses I can actually try on, I don't know how I'd ever find any I like online.

Another problem I'm having, since I'm so cheap, is the whole vision plan thing. I love that we got our exams paid for, but the coverage for glasses seems backwards to me. They'll pay up to $125 for frames, and $25 for lenses. Now, I don't know about you, but my lenses are the part that costs the most - because I have to upgrade to the thinner polycarbonate ones. And then there's the small print on all the advertised specials, "not valid with insurance plans" - So, I can't get a special deal, have to pay full price, but they'll pay $25 towards my $200 lenses. It would make a lot more sense for them to just pay $150, regardless of how you split it up between frames and lenses, but that would probably cost them more.

I'm beginning to think about getting contacts like Cory. That way at least I can get my whole $150 benefit paid toward the cost of my lenses. I'd still need some backup glasses, and the lens upgrades are still going to cost a bit, but at least I would be able to take advantage of the advertised deals.

We added vision coverage to our insurance for next year. We've never had that before, so we always had to pay for our eye exams and glasses out of our own pocket. Even though I know it's important to get my eyes checked and get new glasses every couple of years, that's part of the reason I put it off. That, and actually making an appointment and taking the time to go do it.

This last year I learned about Zenni Optical and really wanted to try ordering some eyeglasses from them. They sell direct to the consumer with no middleman, so their prices are really reasonable. My eyes have been more tired than usual the last several days. I think I am going to have to stop putting it off and finally get new eyeglasses. I know, I keep saying that. I just don't actually make an appointment to get my eyes checked, and there always seems to be something going on, so I don't get to it. Also, I really don't want to spend the money to get a new pair of glasses. Why do they have to be so expensive?

Cory said tonight that he wants new eyeglasses. It's not that his prescription has changed. It's that he wants a change of style. I think his current glasses are just fine, but he's gotten involved in this 'nerdfighter' group online, and he thinks he needs nerdy glasses.

Two things I need to do - get a haircut, and get new glasses. I keep putting it off because I don't know what to do with my hair, and I know new eyeglasses will be expensive. Update: We have ordered glasses from Zenni Optical several times now.  We have always been very pleased with them.  They are truly a great value, and there is no reason to pay over inflated prices for eyeglasses ever again!
