25 Things Peggy Said About Me Once

I was looking for a post on my old livejournal, and I came across this fun list. It still makes me smile even (almost) 10 years later.

25 Things Peggy Said About Me - originally published in March 2009

About a month ago I was working on doing that 25 random things list on Facebook. I was having some problems coming up with my list, so my friend Peggy helped me out. Of course, I didn't open my email until after I had already finished my list, or I could have saved myself all kinds of work. Just for fun I've been meaning to post her list too - just finally getting around to it.

Peggy's 25 things about Anna: (any comments by me in RED - because Peggy hates red, and I'm just that kind of friend)
  1. does laundry on Mondays--- if I don’t do laundry on Mondays the whole week is shot! Or, Monday is the day I spend with my favorite Washer and Dryer. Monday is my workout day, 20 times up and down the stairs to do laundry.
  2. For years thousands of people have relied on my team (my friends and I) to keep their kid’s school activities straight— I have had a large part in the set up of the printed calendar that the school system sends out to the community. (this one needs work)
  3. I am addicted to blogging, I have 4 of my own and have helped ? number of my friends and family set up theirs. I just can’t help myself, they’re free! (LOL! - love that free comment)
  4. frugality is my life, I refuse to pay full price for anything!
  5. I can account for every penny earned and spent in this house since 19?? Receipts rule!! (not quite)
  6. I see no redeeming purpose in dogs, but cats are the coolest! (Well, Tillie is the sweetest, anyway)
  7. I have two amazing kids….. oh, and a husband that isn’t bad either.
  8. I have walked across America. Or , I walk 2 miles every morning, ? days a week. so I estimate that I have walked --- (pick one) across america, to austrailia and back, halfway around the world and my goal in life is to make it around the world. (LOL!)
  9. I have walked ? miles in my current pair of walking shoes.
  10. frugality is my life, I refuse to pay full price for anything!
  11. I have made some of the coolest websites on the internet or, I love to make website/pages and have designed, or helped design many websites. Here are a few you can check out: http://www.audiorescuers.com http://webpages.charter.net/neverhere/hollis/ http://www.feastgoer.org etc
  12. I have naturally curly hair, I like it short, Jeff likes it long--- I indulge him sometimes. (I wouldn't exactly call it curly - just thick and wavy, I guess)
  13. I have a coupon for everything
  14. I am the queen of rebates
  15. I live with a man who hoards Jack Daniels and won’t share. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jchagen/sets/72157594464335174/)
  16. I see no real purpose for the existence of sugar
  17. I rarely shower alone (on the weekends)
  18. If you are going to argue with your husband, you should get naked first
  19. I often wonder why anyone would put a white plastic spoon in the spaghetti sauce
  20. if you come to visit me at my house, bring slippers
  21. Jeff is making me a pergola (I think he's making it for himself, but I'll enjoy it too)
  22. live life in the sun is my motto---air conditioning is evil
  23. I have 3 brothers and really cool parents (yes, I do!)
  24. there is my way of doing things, and the wrong way.
  25. I have this great friend who can’t remember how to do anything in Photoshop, but writes really cool things about me. (LOL!)
See, that was fun, wasn't it? It was fun for me, anyway.
Some of the things haven't changed much - I still do laundry on Mondays; I still walk every weekday; Jeffrey has even more Jack Daniel's; Peggy still needs help with Photoshop.

How to Help Out Someone Who is Mourning a Death

Knowing that someone you care about has recently lost a loved one can be very upsetting. You might know that there is nothing that you can do that can truly take the pain away, but you still want to help in some way. Here are a few things you can do to bring a level of comfort:
27 Things You Should Know About Cheap Bereavement Flowers | cheap bereavement flowers
  • Send Flowers to the Funeral
One popular way to show support to someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one is to send funeral flowers Brookfield IL. You can contact a local florist to find out more about the different flowers or plants that you can send to the funeral home for the service. Be sure to respect the wishes of the family. Sometimes donations to a scholarship fund for the surviving children or donations to a charity may be requested in lieu of flowers.

  • Bring Them Food
Even though your grieving loved one might not feel much like eating, it's important for him or her to do so. Someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one might not feel like cooking or going out to get something to eat so you can help by bringing food. You can prepare food yourself, or you can pick up something from a local restaurant. Either way, the hot meal is sure to be appreciated. Stocking up your loved one's refrigerator and freezer with food that can be eaten later and even bringing along paper plates and other necessities can also be very helpful.

  • Help with Child Care
Taking care of children can be challenging at even the best times, and it can be even harder when someone is going through the grieving process. If you volunteer to babysit for even a little while, this can help take a big load off of your loved one's shoulders during a difficult time.

Helping someone who is grieving can be very hard to do, but there are ways that you can help. The tips above are great for helping someone who has suffered the loss of a loved one.

I Love This Idea!

I shared this video on Facebook 4 years ago. Thanks to Facebook memories, I was reminded again this morning. I loved it 4 years ago, and I love it just as much today! This is such an awesome idea. I really, really hope that this program is still going on and perhaps it has grown a bit.

What do you think? Great idea, isn't it?

Help Kristen and Ryan

My precious friends Ryan and Kristen lost their 7 week old firstborn son on Thanksgiving.  Along with their devastating loss, they are now faced with the emergency and medical expenses and the cost of planning a funeral.  Please, if you can help at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

And please, keep these young parents (and their extended family) in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

I have cats.  For my last post I needed a picture of a dog, so I put out a request on facebook yesterday asking for dog pictures I could use.  I ended up using a picture of my friend Alli's dog Liberty and a picture of a cute dog that showed up at my friend Mary's house one day.  BUT, I had several other friends share pictures of their dogs, and I just couldn't leave them out.

So, here are some pictures of some cute dogs - and one cute kid - for your enjoyment.

from my friend Lori

My adorable niece Sammi (on top of a dog)
shared by her daddy

A cool dog and a mouse - shared by Craig

My friend Melissa's dog

and my friend Susan's 'monsters'
Don't they have it tough?

Thanks to everyone who shared their dogs with me!

Book Review: Bread & Wine

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Shauna Niequist

About this book:
As a follow up to her two bestselling books, Bittersweet and Cold Tangerines, author and blogger Shauna Niequist returns with the perfect read for those who love food and value the community and connection of family and friends around the table. Bread and Wine is a collection of essays about family relationships, friendships, and the meals that bring us together. This mix of Anne Lamott and Barefoot Contessa is a funny, honest, and vulnerable spiritual memoir. Bread and Wine is a celebration of food shared, reminding readers of the joy found in a life around the table. It's about the ways God teaches and nourishes people as they nourish the people around them. It's about hunger, both physical and otherwise, and the connections between the two. With wonderful recipes included, from Bacon-Wrapped Dates to Mango Chicken Curry to Blueberry Crisp, readers will be able to recreate the comforting and satisfying meals that come to life in Bread and Wine.

I haven't read either of her previous books, but I was very eager to read this one when I was offered an advance reading copy by Zondervan.  We've often talked about how important it is in building relationships to share meals together, as well as tying the experience to the bread and wine that Jesus offered saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me" and "This cup is the new covenant between God and you, sealed by the shedding of my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it."  Are we only supposed to remember occasionally, when we're in church, when we're taking the symbols in a ceremonial manner?  Or is it like Shauna says in this book - "And I believe that Jesus asked for us to remember him during the breaking of the bread and the drinking of the wine every time, every meal, every day - no matter where we are, who we are, what we've done."  Yes!

I really enjoyed the book.  The focus isn't really on the bread & wine, though that is an underlying theme.  Mostly it's about the importance of sharing meals together and the relationships that are built around the table.  Through good times and bad, the common theme is the food and the eating - together.  Shauna gives the reader a glimpse into her life, a life where she is learning to embrace her appetites, let go of her desire for perfection and just be fully present in the moment, and accept herself for who she is, and she invites the reader to "start where you are" and begin doing the same thing.

I could really relate to the need to let go of perfection.  I have a hard time letting people into my house (or my life) if I haven't had a chance to prepare, and I can make myself crazy doing all the cleaning and straightening before people are coming over - and they probably don't even notice anyway!  Sometimes the choice is, simply, be here - imperfect, messy, tired, whatever - or miss the moment, the conversation, the time around the table.  In that chapter, I marked the following line - "We have, each one of us, been entrusted with one life, made up of days and hours and minutes.  We're spending them according to our values, whether or not we admit it."  Is it more important to be perfect or to spend that time with the people who matter?

As I try to write this review, I keep looking back through the book.  I have little pink sticky notes sticking out everywhere, where I've marked passages that really struck me.  This one in particular:

"I want to cultivate a deep sense of gratitude, of groundedness, of enough, even while I'm longing for something more.  The longing and the gratitude, both.  I'm practicing believing that God knows more than I know, that he sees what I can't, that he's weaving a future I can't even imagine from where I sit this morning."

Shauna's attitude toward cooking and recipes pretty much sums up my feelings - "Recipes are how we learn all the rules, and cooking is knowing how to break them to suit our tastes or preferences.  Following a recipe is like playing scales, and cooking is jazz." - except that I don't really know much about music.  That being said, most of the recipes shared in this book seem a bit fussy to me, and I love to cook.  Yes, there are a couple that I will probably try - the Dark Chocolate Sea Salted Toffee, for one, OH, and the Roasted Broccoli - but most of them just sounded like too much work, and they called for ingredients that I don't usually have on hand.  Hopefully that won't discourage people from finding their own recipes and dishes to share, gathering people around their own tables, and building those important relationships.  Like she says, "Focus on making people comfortable, on creating a space protected from the rush and chaos of daily life, a space full of laughter and safety and soul."  Shauna has shared what works for her and her family here, and we all have to find out what works for us.  The point is to get started, open the door and start making our own memories around our own tables.

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes is available on Amazon in both hardcover and Kindle editions.  For more information about Shauna Niequist, visit her webpage.

Thank you to Zondervan and Handlebar for giving me a review copy of this book.  I really enjoyed it.

Thank You, Unknown Neighbor

I haven't been online much because I've been interacting with people in person - outside of the internet and social networks.  Yes, I do that once in a while.

We attended the Winter Family Weekend hosted by the Church of God Cincinnati in Lexington, KY.  This was our 4th year attending.  It's a great event that includes plenty of fun, food, and fellowship with wonderful friends.  We eat, we drink, we talk, we laugh, we stay up way too late, we play sports we don't usually play and end up in pain, and we would really hate to miss it.  This year my parents even came for a couple days!  Usually we go visit them after the weekend is over, but this year we didn't have the time, so it was nice that we got to see them anyway.

This year we headed home afterwards so Jeffrey could go back to work on Wednesday.  I decided to stay with him for the rest of the week - just because.  For some reason I still like hanging out with him...

So I've got a few days here alone in the apartment.  I thought I'd have to survive without internet access - unless I wanted to go over to the laundry area where they offer free wifi, along with the noise of washers and dryers - but, when I booted my computer up yesterday afternoon, it found an unsecured wireless network and connected.  So, I just want to thank the unknown neighbor who is graciously allowing me to use his internet!

There are 8 other wireless networks I can see, but all of them are secured.  This one will probably end up being secured eventually, but I'm only here for a few days...

Still Not Home

Once we left Lexington, Jeffrey and I drove a couple hours to visit my parents - and brother, sister-in-law and their 4 adorable kids.  We have been blessed enough to see mom & dad a couple times a year these past few years.  They came up for Beth's graduation in 2009, came for Cory's graduation in 2010, and then came again last summer to see their brand-new great-grandson, Jason.  Then, each year since we started going to the Winter Family Weekend in Lexington, we've taken a few days to visit them, since they live in the same state and just a couple hours away.  It would be a shame not to!

So, after spending a great weekend with great friends, we're getting to spend some time with family.  It makes it hard to even think about going home or to even think about writing anything about eyelash enhancer! But, Cory's at home, and it will be nice to get to spend some time with him before he runs off to ACTF with the cast and crew of his play - and we have to get home in time to see it again on Monday night!

Hangin' With My Friends

I haven't been around much - at all - because we've been busy spending time with a whole bunch of wonderful people.  This was our 3rd time going to the Winter Family Weekend in Lexington, KY - where we get to fellowship, eat and play all weekend.  We don't get much sleep, but we can all sleep later, right?

Game Night - Double Hearts w/ some really fun people

I love spending time with old friends and making new ones.  Even the sore muscles from playing volleyball two days in a row are good!  I won't talk about my friend Jeana beating up on my in the Sumo Wrestling circle - but I might post the video if I ever get it, because I know it's hilarious to watch.  (Even if it might be embarrassing to me - you won't laugh at me, right?)

Tuesday Tidbits

I missed last Tuesday because I was out of town, and I was busy.  We celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in Iowa with some wonderful friends - friends that have become like family.  I was just too busy spending time with people and attending seminars, services, etc. to blog much.  There were a few posts that I just had to do, but that was it.

My brother and sister-in-law and their three girls were in Iowa with us.  It was nice finally getting to meet those precious girls.  Why do they have to live so far away?  Did I ask that question already?

While we were in Iowa, we had a get-together with a bunch of friends, and we started playing with Google Earth, visiting everybody's house.  Oh, if we could only travel that fast!  We could get together all the time.  As it is, our time together is always too short.  Years ago we celebrated the Feast with a large, organized church, sometimes with thousands of people.  Now we get close to 300 people, and we think the group is getting too big.  The emphasis is more on building relationships and spending time together.  We eat together, we play together, we study and pray together.  Sure, years ago we all went to church together, in those huge buildings, with those thousands of people - but there were so many people there wasn't much chance of building lasting relationships, and everyone was always in such a hurry to rush out the door after services to go and do something.  It's really nice to go to somewhere-in-the-middle-of-nowhere, Iowa where's there's really nothing to do - and nobody cares! And it's just so hard to say good-bye when it's over...

I had some things going through my head, and then I sat down to do this post.  Where did those things go?  Sometimes it's just a matter of sitting down and seeing what comes up - and sometimes that's what it takes to get me going.  It seems the longer I go between posts, the harder it is to get back to it.  It's like total writer's block!  Or something like that.

Watching Dancing with the Stars and hoping that Chaz goes home - it's way past time.

Tune in next week to see if I catch Tuesday before it gets away from me...

Went to Michigan for the Weekend

We had an awesome weekend in Michigan with some wonderful people.  I wish they weren't 6 hours away - or that Lake Michigan wasn't between us and we didn't have to go through Chicago to get there - but it's all worth it to be able to spend time together.

We stayed up way too late, ate lots of good food, had lots of great conversation, and enjoyed the company of some amazing young people.  It makes me wish we could do it more often.  Then again, I don't know if we could survive.

We left home Friday morning and didn't get home until around 8:30 last night.  And then we had to load up all Cory's stuff and take him back to school because Spring Break is over, so by the time we were finally home for good, it was time to watch the news and go to bed.  And morning came too early...

So, I'll get caught up one of these days.  Yeah, I know, I keep saying that, maybe someday it will be true.  I will at least pick a winner for my BabyBond giveaway by tomorrow, so those of you who entered, keep a look out for my email!  But, for now, it's almost bedtime again, and I'm tired.

Miss Me?

We just got back from spending a glorious 10 days with a great group of people. Our days (and nights) were filled with fellowship, food and drink, seminars, services, fellowship, service projects, dancing, hiking, fellowship, late night brisket, Double Hearts, limited Internet access, talent and fun, and more fellowship.  There was also lots and lots of music for those who like that kind of thing - and there were plenty!  Anyway, it was a great Feast of Tabernacles, but it's over, and it's time to get back to real life.

We got home Sunday afternoon, unloaded the van, and then I had to take Cory back to school.  It was nice having him with us - even though he was always busy with his friends, and we didn't get to see him much.  Now he's back to being a college student.  And I'm just trying to get caught up - unpacking, laundry, etc.  There's the whole mess from packing to go combined with the mess of all the stuff that came home with us along with the mail that piled up while we were gone.  Is it possible to ever catch up?  I also need to get the pictures off my camera.

Hopefully I can get myself back to blogging regularly, too.  I have a giveaway post I need to get put together - and you're really going to want to see that one.  I may just have to give up on the catching up thing, sit down, and make myself do it - while ignoring everyone else's pictures on facebook.  I wonder if they just skipped unpacking and laundry and went straight to the pictures?

Time Flies When Friends Get Together

Cory's bestfriend Travis spent the past week here.  He lives in Georgia, so the boys don't get to see each other more than once or twice a year.  Imagine, a whole week together.  In person.

source: Cory's DailyBooth, taken when we got home from the airport last Tuesday.

I think the boys had a great time together.  They hung out in the basement, watched movies, ate a lot of junk food, stayed up very late, organized and attended a Murder Mystery party at the library, went to visit some girls - at a bookstore and in Illinois, went to see Inception on the UltraScreen, went to Menard's, and I don't know what all.

It sounds way better than a Branson vacation, doesn't it? At least if you're a teenage guy.  We had to take Travis to the airport today so he could go back home to his family.  I think both boys were a bit sad that the week wasn't a lot longer.  The good news is that they might be able to catch up on their sleep now.

Food and Conversation

Fruit, French Toast Casserole, and coffee on the deck this morning was wonderful.  The food was great, if I do say so myself, and it is just so pleasant sitting out on the deck.  We were planning to cook out and eating dinner on the deck, too - but it started raining around 2 this afternoon and continued raining.  So Jeffrey still cooked out - he pulled the grill over to the back door, so he could stand under the overhang and cook without really getting wet.  So, we may have had to eat inside, but we still had wonderful grilled food.

Then we sat around talking about all kinds of things like playing lexulous on facebook, house plants and garden plants, big trucks with little horns, over the counter prenatal vitamins, and spoiled little dogs - and plenty of other things I can't even remember now.

Now, it's probably bed time so we can get up tomorrow all ready for the big day - Cory is graduating from high school!

Reconnect with 100 of Your Friends at the Hampton

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hampton Hotels. All opinions are 100% mine.

Imagine an entire hotel filled with people you know. Wouldn't that be awesome? People to hang out with in the lobby, perhaps to play a game of Double Hearts. People to get wet with in the pool - the kids and teenagers really enjoy that.  Long conversations in the bar, pizza parties in the halls, and not a lot of sleep.  I speak from experience, because we've had several week-long or weekend getaways with church friends from all over the country.  Let me tell you - it really is awesome.

Hampton_logo
Hampton Hotels is going to give one lucky winner the chance to experience just that.  Enter the Hampton Chain of Friends Sweepstakes, and you could win a 2 night stay in a Hampton Hotel for yourself and a whole bunch of your friends.  You get the entire hotel! (100 rooms)  Sure, facebook is great for reconnecting with old friends and keeping in touch with friends and family, but this would be even better, right?  An entire weekend to just be together would really be great.  The winner also gets $5000 to help with the taxes - and maybe to spring for that pizza party.

Besides the grand prize, there are 100 First Prizes.  First Prize winners get a weekend stay for themselves and three of their friends.  This sweepstakes is open to everyone, so what are you waiting for?  Enter today and share with all your friends.  Somebody's gotta win, right?  It might as well be me, I mean you or one of your friends.  (I really mean ME, or one of MY friends!)

Choosing the Wrong Friends

I was just reading this website on teen drug treatment and saw where it says that peer pressure is one of the big reasons why teens start taking drugs.  It seems to work that way, because from some of the things Beth has told me about her friends, even the best kids can get in with the wrong crowd and make a whole lot of bad choices.  One of her friends who seemed like such a nice guy back in high school has apparently been in jail for drug possession and maybe even dealing.  And it sounds like so many of her other friends have at least experimented with drugs, and some of them could really benefit from teen drug rehab.

I don't know all the teen drug statistics, but on the surface it would seem that teens living in a small town would be less likely to get addicted to drugs than teens in the big city.  Apparently that's not the case - teens from anywhere can be at risk.  Thankfully, even though she hasn't always made the best choices when it comes to friends, and other things, Beth has avoided drugs.  At least I choose to believe her when she says so, especially when I see how upset she gets when Tim's so-called friends want him to smoke weed with them.  Maybe his 'friends' should look into teen Marijuana rehab?  Except that they're no longer teens, and they don't seem to want to quit.  This is, apparently, what they want to do with their lives.  Sad.

Unfortunately, as long as Tim considers them friends, Beth is going to have to deal with the whole thing.  She's not really having to deal with her high school friends and all their issues because she doesn't see them much anymore, not since she started dating Tim - but that's a whole other issue.

Do You Facebook for the Games?

I cannot believe how many games there are on facebook.  For a long time I just left all the game updates on my newsfeed, figuring it was a way to see what my friends are up to.  It wasn't until I started hiding all the games last week that I actually realized there were so many.  Before, they just kind of blended together, people talking about a philadelphia job or a barn-raising, or accepting a sparkly heart.

Then I started hiding them.  I hid Farmville and Mafia Wars and Vampire Wars and something about Castles.  I hid Yoville and Cafe World and Happy Little Aquarium or whatever it's called.  And just when I thought I had them all hidden, something else would show up.  Seriously, how many are there?  And how do these people find time to play them all?

The only thing I'm worried about is that now I'll never hear from some of my facebook friends, because I don't think they ever did anything but play the games.  So, if you just facebook for the games, I guess I'm gonna miss you.

My Son the T-Shirt Designer

I mentioned in my last post that Cory got a box of 60 t-shirts this week. Now, the boy loves his t-shirts, but there's no way he needed 60 t-shirts for himself. These t-shirts are for him and a whole bunch of his friends.

A while back Cory and one of his friends came up with an idea for a shirt - no, it wasn't "visit new york", I think that one's already been done. They wanted their shirt to say i'm pretty good at hugs. So Cory put together a design, tweaked the design, got everyone's opinion, and finally settled on the exact, perfect design. Then, he started taking orders - the more shirts he ordered the better the price was for everyone. Well, the orders and the checks started coming in, and before he knew it, he had 60 shirts ordered!

He ordered them from CustomInk.com, and they turned out really nice. They make it really easy to design the shirts and get the exact look you want, and they have all kinds of products to choose from. Cory went with the Hanes tagless T. The price is determined not only by the product you choose, but also by the number of items you order, the more you order the better the price. With a 60 piece order, Cory got all these for around $10/shirt, which is really good. And shipping is FREE - gotta love that. Also, their customer service is top rate. If you have a group that needs custom designed shirts (or shorts or hats or bags or...) I'd suggest checking them out. (and, NO, they aren't paying me to say so)

Cory was so excited to get these, he had to wear his to school the next day - and came home with a list of 20 more people who want one. Me, I didn't order one or want one, because I'm not really a hugger. Cory, on the other hand, has always been a huge hugger - and apparently so are his friends.

Talk for a Change

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Mira Sorvino has teamed up with The Allstate Foundation to encourage people to “Pass it On, Act & Learn” (P.A.L.) about domestic violence.

Facts about Domestic Violence:
  • Each day in the U.S., three women die as result of domestic violence.
  • More than one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
  • More than three out of four Americans know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.
Even so, few feel comfortable discussing the subject, and the Allstate Foundation would like to change that.

Let’s talk for a change - Visit the Click to Empower website and share a story about overcoming domestic violence or helping a “gal pal” in need, read others' stories, and help spread the word. Each person who shares a personal experience can be entered to receive a limited edition Tell a Gal P.A.L. t-shirt, as worn by Mira Sorvino, as a thank you for inspiring others.

All Night Long

My kids had it good - compared to the others who went to the movie with them last night. They got back to the house sometime between 3:00 and 3:30 this morning. I didn't actually hear them come in, but I heard some water running in the bathroom somewhere in that time period. About then it started raining so I had to get up and close some windows. I didn't see anyone then.

When I got up this morning, I heard laughing coming from the basement. A couple of Cory's friends stayed over, and they were going to crash here. But they never went to sleep! Then Alex's mom came and picked them up about 7am because Jordan had to work at 8:30. Alex had to work at noon, and Vanessa had to work at 10:00 - and Tim had to work all day like normal. Cory didn't have anything planned for the day, and Beth took the day off work because she knew they were going to be out late. So Beth was still in bed, and Cory finally went to bed when his friends left, and they both slept for hours. I have a feeling everyone else is really going to crash once they finish work for the day.

When's the last time you PARTAED all night? Just thinking about it makes me tired - I know I'm too old for that stuff!
