I'm Living in the Basement

Somewhere in between installing the new windows in the house and patching the drywall in our bedroom, they found more damage.  Nail pops and drywall damage throughout the house - they thought from the lifting, shaking, twisting of the tornado.  So, they submitted it to the insurance company and got it approved to patch up the drywall and repaint the whole house.

So, the good news is that everything gets repainted and is going to look fresh and new.  Jeffrey has been talking about doing that for a couple years now, but I've been putting him off.  Because of the smell of the paint.  But, I can't put it off any longer.  Today they started painting.  They got Cory's room painted and then our bedroom and bathroom.  Tomorrow they move on to the living room, dining room and kitchen.

It's definitely going to look nice, but the smell has me living in the basement.  With the door closed, it isn't too bad down here.  It's already smelling a bit better upstairs, since the paint has dried and the windows have been open all night.  I just need to decide if it's possible to sleep up there, or if I have to sleep down here.

Give me every tip you have for getting rid of that paint smell as quickly as possible so, once they get everything finished, I can move back upstairs before too long.

  1. One thing that might help is to put a bowl of white vinegar in each room. A quick search found this: http://www.ehow.com/how_4425293_eliminate-odors-vinegar.html
I used vinegar for the mildew smell in our basement on Graham...it worked.
Is Beth's room being repainted, too? Her Illini colors won't fit with the rest of your nice fresh looking walls. :-)

  3. i was going to suggest vinegar also, it works well for musty odors, i haven't tried it for paint.

  4. I put a dish of vinegar in our bedroom but haven't put it anywhere else yet. I'm just trying to get as much stuff out of the way as possible - so I'll wait until after they're done. I'm not sure if it's doing anything or not, but it's certainly worth a try.
