Which Came First?

If you or a loved one has mesothelioma you're supposed to call a lawyer. At least that's what the commercials say. Have you noticed, there are so many commercials urging people to call lawyers who will supposedly get them a lot of money. It makes me wonder which came first - the lawyers or the stingy insurance companies. Why do people have to sue the insurance companies to get the money they deserve when they have a car accident, get hurt on the job, or get some disease because they were exposed to toxic chemicals at work?

It seems that the settlements the lawyers get are a lot more than is necessary, and I can't help but wonder if the insurance would pay up front, wouldn't they come out ahead - because they would only have to pay for the actual expenses. They would only have to pay what's fair, and they wouldn't have to pay the lawyers too.

I guess lawyers have to work, too...

  1. A very good point, indeed. Why can't people just do the right thing... sigh.

  2. These mesothelioma commercials drive me crazy. I used to work in a pathology department, and one of my responsibilities was taking care of the slides and records requests for legal cases. The letters would say "We need slides in the next 10 days for a case from 1988." Well, it takes time to get the tissue blocks out of the archive, prepare the slides, have the pathologist review the case again (just in case the diagnosis gets called into question by the expert witness) prepare the billing, and ship the slides out. If it was 20 years ago, why do we only have 10 days to get you the slides? Most of the time, the patient's diagnosis wasn't even mesothelioma!
